No parent ever thinks that their child is going to be diagnosed with cancer
Pamela Nielson didn’t, but childhood cancer does not care, it does not discriminate. It can enter your home at anytime, leaving you devastated and clutching on to your child for dear life. Pamela lost little Kai in January, after a two-year battle with infant acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, an aggressive form of blood cancer. But Pamela and Kai are not alone, 10 children are diagnosed with cancer in the UK every day. Of those a quarter won’t survive the treatment and the vast majority will be left with lifelong side effects from the treatments that have changed little in the last 30years.
As a group of parents of kids with cancer, many of whom have already lost their child to this awful disease, we have formed the Glow Gold September-childhood cancer awareness campaign with the backing and support of many well known charities nationally and locally including Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens Fund, Clic Sargent, CCLG and CCLASP.
Our aim is to ensure the colour gold becomes synonymous with childhood cancer and our awareness month September. Our aim being that with increased awareness of childhood cancer, comes greater awareness of the early signs and symptoms, earlier diagnosis, increased funding, increased research, kinder more targeted therapy and ultimately a change in the prognosis for kids diagnosed with childhood cancer. We can’t affect what has happened to us and our children but we can make a difference for you and yours. And ensure there is a future for children like little Kai.
So what are we asking you to do? We have been asking iconic buildings and landmarks nationally and internationally to light up gold from dusk until dawn in September. We already have many iconic buildings and landmarks on board including Edinburgh Castle, Spinnaker Tower, Althorp House, The Kelpies and The Gateshead Millennium Bridge to mention just a few.
We are asking venues where possible to illuminate gold for the whole month of September dusk till dawn or whenever the building is normally illuminated at night. If only one evening is possible we are asking that that be the 1st. We have enclosed a how to illuminate document that should cover any questions which includes an advice line should you require further information specific to your own external lighting. If your lighting is sodium and you already illuminate in a gold colour we are asking if you would be kind enough to dedicate your lighting during the month to the children battling and children lost to this awful illness.
